Some things have changed since Aeverium released “Time” seven years ago. Singer Vanessa Katakalos has been on board since 2018 and forms a razor-sharp vocal front with founder Marcel Römer. After the band’s future looked bleak for a while, they managed to complete their third album through crowdfunding. “The Secret Door” sounds melodic, but at the same time powerful and aggressive as usual from the speakers. In cooperation with René Anlauff (Heldmaschine), a few NDH sprinkles (“Herzlinie”) have been mixed into Aeverium’s gothic-inspired alternative metal. However, Aeverium are still best at mixing hard riffs and catchy choruses like in “Living in Elysium” and the over-hymn “Whatever”.
