With her new album, “The Tarot Songs,” Bianca Stücker reads the cards. Well, in any case, it’s all very intuitive. In our July/August issue, we talk with the charming musician about (un)usual instruments, life behind a glass wall, and fate.

But for now, let’s chat a bit about some of the songs and start with “Temperantia (Temperance).” Bianca explains: It’s a beautiful card whose meaning isn’t immediately clear, because “temperance” isn’t a very common word in everyday language. It’s about—in addition to equilibrium, balance, and harmony—finding the right measure, and that is indeed important in many ways and in many situations. In any case, the card has nothing to do with ‘mediocrity’ (which is what one might assume).”

“Fortitudo – One of a Kind (Strength)” has a dramatic feel to it. Bianca Stücker reflects: “With ‘Fortitudo,’ I had two things in mind: first, the meaning commonly used today, which also encompasses a zest for life and sensuality; and second, an older meaning that revolves around ‘culture over nature’—that is, humanity subjugating nature. The text can thus be understood as a passionate but unfulfilled love story, but also as a relationship between humans and nature that is always reciprocal—and, of course, unique—and always carries connotations of finitude or, in the worst case, finality. Uniqueness or ‘strangeness’ can be both a distinction and a burden: what is special can be celebrated, but it can also be stigmatized. In this respect, I believe it is an ambivalent quality …”
