DEPECHE MODE: Too hot?

On August 20, 1984 – exactly 41 years ago to the day – Depeche Mode released “Master and Servant”. Which of the 5 facts did you already know?
★ “Master and Servant” is the band’s eleventh single.
★ As the title suggests, the track deals with the topic of BDSM and describes sexual practices, which naturally causes controversy.
★ Musically, the theme is reflected in whip lashes and chain rattling. The former was allegedly recorded by producer Daniel Miller himself, hissing and spitting to simulate the sound of a whip, as Depeche Mode were unable to adequately record the sound of a real whip. In another interview, however, Fletch contradicted this theory and said that he had been kissed by a whip once in his life – and that it could be heard on “Master and Servant”.
★ The topic of the song seems to be too hot for the American population. Many radio stations refused to play the song.
★ “Master and Servant” has already been performed live 370 times. This makes it the most played composition on the album “Some Great Reward”.
