Hel’s Throne from Saxony-Anhalt don’t play pagan metal, as one might assume from the band name and song titles, but rather symphonic power metal featuring alternating male and female vocals. The sextet doesn’t go overboard with the bombast, though, and maintains a healthy underlying intensity. Songs like “Ragnarök,” “Last Ride of the Valkyries,” and “Helheim” are instantly catchy, thanks in part to the dark voice of frontwoman Julie Blue. The growls from guitarist Christian Libza provide a nice contrast. Fans of melodic metal are sure to enjoy exploring the “Northwind Chronicles.”
