NATURE OF WIRES + MACHINA X: An intense ’80s cover song

An ’80s classic takes on a new, darker twist: Nature of Wires and Machina X have put their spin on Icehouse’s “Hey Little Girl,” infusing the song with their very own signature style. Singer Annie James and Nature of Wires mastermind Gary Watts have opted for a slower, minimalist, and haunting sound that deliberately departs from the melancholic pop of the original.
“None of us sees the point in covering a song if we don’t feel like we can truly make it our own,” Annie explains. Gary adds that he generally approaches cover versions as if he were producing the song himself, had he been the original songwriter. But “Hey Little Girl” apparently won’t be their last joint release. Annie and Gary already have a live setlist of eight or nine songs, and Gary is also planning to write new material. In the long term, they might even release a joint album combining previously released singles and new songs. The two will share more details about this soon.
