Same as before, or all new? That’s the question HKSPK asks on their second album, “Heimkehr,” as they explore personal and global fates from which people have returned changed. The trio tackles these themes with a wild and imposing blend of black, death, and thrash metal. While black metal elements still predominate on “Torture”—with clanging riffs, eerily dark melodies, and the infernal screams of singer Jim Kalubba—on “White Secretion II,” the pounding strumming of death metal hits you right in the face. Thus, even with a runtime of just 25 minutes, the album delivers impressive variety.
