Interview with BZFOS (2/2)

In the first part of our interview, we chatted with Dead Richy Gein from Bloodsucking Zombies from Outer Space about the band’s beginnings and the new album “Blood Is for Suckers”. That’s where we continue now.
Decay
O: Although the music is particularly fast-paced, “Die Young” made me think. What was the source of inspiration?
R: Your own decline! The tiresome topic of getting older and the sheer despair that can come over you when you realize that everything around you is changing rapidly and you can’t or don’t want to keep up. In addition, the theme of “eternal youth” fits perfectly with the vampire concept and there is always a sense of sadness and melancholy.
Vampiric
O: “Van Helsing Syndrome” got a nice visualizer. Is there a background story to it?
R: We organized an online treasure hunt for the song with tasks related to “Van Helsing versus Dracula”. The winners received a limited edition four-track tape that wasn’t available in stores, and the main prize was a “vampire hunter diorama” that an Australian artist made especially for us. Her name is “_formaldeheidi” on Instagram! This diorama can be seen in the Visualizer, and was part of a treasure hunt task at the time. In terms of content, the text revolves around the fight between Dracula and Van Helsing, which can be read here as a metaphor for a toxic relationship. Both are constantly hurting each other but still can’t get away from each other. I found this approach extremely exciting and therefore incorporated it into the song.
Bloody
O: The latest single is “Evocation” with a beautifully bloody video. How did you experience the shoot?
R: It was a lot messier than you can see in the finished video. We were soaked through to our underwear in no time at all. The planned blood/water bombs just wouldn’t burst, and the shoot turned into a veritable orgy of pouring that would have been worthy of Hermann Nitsch. But it was great fun.
Krampus!
O: I was also very enthusiastic about “Krampus Is Coming”. When did you realize that you also had to pay tribute to good old Krampus?
R: We played our traditional Christmas concert in Vienna for 15 years, and this year will be the last time, by the way. So we’ve always been quite active in the run-up to Christmas. Krampus Day is a great date for various promotional activities, so the idea of writing a song about St. Nicholas’ grim helper was quite obvious. The song and lyrics were written during a rehearsal, and it was released over a year ago as the first herald for the new album.
Horror and true crime
O: How can we imagine you find the themes, how do you always come up with new subjects?
R: That’s an easy question to answer – that’s just me – I love horror movies and I love music, and my whole life has been influenced by that. Having worked in the print industry myself, I’ve taken care of all our artwork from the beginning. I’m constantly inspired by new horror themes that would be suitable for the zombies as a new “red thread” – there’s always something new to discover. If I need a distraction, I like to turn to the true crime genre. My problem is more that I have too many ideas and can’t always get everything under one roof.
Soul balm
O: What was the first movie you saw with Vincent Price and what was the reason for the epic song “Dear Mister Price”?
R: That was “The Cabinet of Horrors of Dr. Phibes“, when I was about 10 or 11 years old. From then on, I was a total fan. Vincent Price is not called the master of the macabre for nothing – his charismatic performance, often bordering on overacting, gives every movie its very own stamp. For me, his films are balm for the soul; he acts like a fatherly friend or beloved fairy-tale uncle. When I can’t sleep or am feeling down, my first port of call is always the shelf of Vincent Price films.
Anticipation
O: From the pictures we see of your live concerts, it’s always a real spectacle! What can we look forward to on the upcoming tour?
R: We’ll definitely be playing some of the new album and are currently working on new shows to go with it. It won’t be boring for a second, I can guarantee that.
