That’s how it was with WHITE LIES

The shrill intro to “I Don’t Wanna Go to Mars” rang out from the silence and the stage was bathed in a matching deep red. The approximately three-metre-high rectangular lighting elements placed behind each of the four Englishmen illuminated the hall in a different color for each song, matching the respective album of the song. For about an hour, White Lies from London brought the completely sold-out Muffathalle to a boil. – A clear contrast to the wintry temperatures in Munich.
She’s in Parties provided the first warm-up act of the evening in Hamburg. The Brits, who support around a third of the tour, set the tone perfectly with their equally synth-heavy, dreamy rock and captivated the already large crowd early on. The spherical, light melodies provided the ideal soundtrack for dreaming away from everyday life. So the wait for White Lies was bridged perfectly. With their setlist, they took the fans on a journey through their musical past to the present in the form of their recently released album “Night Light”. With six songs, this album was the most frequently played and was perfectly integrated into the classics such as “Farewell to the Fareground” and “There Goes Our Love Again”.
The sometimes restrained or even futuristic-sounding synthesizer melodies of Tommy Bowen, who supported the band live, and the driving, almost stoic bass of Charles Cave provided the emotional depth that allowed singer and guitarist Harry McVeigh to repeatedly get carried away with his guitar solos. Between songs, he also took a moment to wonder, with a bit of British humor, where the past 17 years had gone since the release of the debut album “To Lose My Life” and to thank the audience for their continued loyalty. This gratitude was fully reflected in his vocals and he used the full range of his vocal abilities, whether it was an almost spoken, breathy rendition of the album’s namesake “Night Light” or a little more tempo as “The Price of Love” demanded of him. After “In the Middle”, there was something new for the ears, the four said goodbye and released their followers into the lights of the night.
