★ The working title of “The Joshua Tree” was “The Two Americas”.
★ Lyricist Bono himself speaks of a “mythical America” and a “real America” that collide in the course of the album.
★ U2 had already toured the USA extensively and was inspired by the rich geography: Desert, rain, dust and water appear again and again as lyrical motifs.
★ The album title was inspired by photographer Anton Corbijn, who told U2 about the resilient Joshua trees during an extended photo shoot in the desert
★ The album went 14x platinum in New Zealand, 10x in the UK. 5x in Australia, 3x in France, Spain and Germany, platinum in Argentina, Denmark, Hong Kong, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland and the Netherlands. Diamond (with more than 10,000,000 records sold) was released in the USA.
