“<\/strong>I could never say I regret taking these drugs.” (Chris Corner)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

In the first two parts, we spoke to Chris Corner about the new album “Fault Lines\u00b2”, animal soul balm, vacation as illusion, parallel worlds, light reflections, desert life, idols at eye level and the fall of masks.\nWe now continue the conversation with IAMX<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n

False friends?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Orkus: You say you’ve had experience with drugs.\nWhich drug do you see as a friend and which as an enemy – and why? <\/strong>Chris Corner: <\/strong>Red wine, cocaine, MDMA, sometimes ketamine.\nThose were my friends for a while.\nI’ve weaned off the class A drugs, but depending on my mood, red wine keeps coming in and out of my life.\nThe last year has been pretty intense emotionally, and I’ve indulged more than was probably healthy, though in truth self-medicating is sometimes necessary.\nRight now, I’m “straight edge” again.\nI could never say that I regret taking those drugs.\nThese journeys were necessary, and opening the mind in this way can sometimes be crucial for neurodiverse people.\nVices have shaped my character.\nI know what I want and what I don’t want, and what works and what doesn’t. <\/p>\n\n

O: Is IAMX always a blessing for you or sometimes a curse?<\/strong>CC: <\/strong>I would say 70% blessing.\nThe curse is dealing with the practical side of business life, crazy traveling and hard transitions.\nAdrenaline and missing my animals when I’m on tour.\nThe rest is joy and connection, lots of dopamine and love and sometimes “kink”. <\/p>\n\n

Self-discovery?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

O: The ideas for “Fault Lines\u00b9<\/em>” came about before “Machinate”.\nWas it the same for the second part? <\/strong>CC: <\/strong>Yes.\n“Fault Lines” really describes an extremely important time of self-discovery.\nAll albums do that, but these two albums feel brutally real.\nHow do I fit into the world?\nHow do I love?\nWhat is my true purpose?\nDo I love myself enough?\nAm my needs being met?\nIt delves deeper than ever before.\nIt’s about details – the tiny interactions in love, the psychology of desire, aging, the power of mortality, living through the full chaos of life without losing your mind.\nThese are transitional albums with a therapeutic effect.\nPublic catharsis. <\/p>\n\n

A refuge for enchanting eccentrics<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

O: Mental health plays an important role in your lyrics.\nBut it’s also important to you that your fans get help when they need it.\nYour fanbase has become a strong community that is there for each other.\nIn the song “Neurosymphony”, you also reach out to others who are struggling with mental health issues.\nWould you like to give something back to this community? <\/strong>CC<\/strong>: <\/strong><\/em>Absolutely.\nIt has become part of my destiny and my duty.\nArt is communal.\nIt helps us process the world when language, science and religion fail us.\nMy fans are incredibly unique, loyal, conscientious, warm, fierce and immensely supportive.\nI want to provide a place of sanctuary and safety, an alternative way of life to normal society.\nI live physically and mentally outside of society.\nI’ve never fit in and never will, and if my music can make or encourage others to find themselves, accept and love themselves as beautiful freaks and realize that the world isn’t just completely fucked up, selfish and falling apart.\nThere are like-minded people out there who will love and accept them.\nI am one of those people, and I want to be there for as many of them as possible. <\/p>\n\n
