In our two-part interview, we talk with The Calm Grey about “In Between Sadness.” <\/p>\n\n

Between post-punk and personal grief<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Hailing from North Rhine-Westphalia, with roots in Essen, Herne, and Bielefeld, the post-punk and dark wave duo The Calm Grey crafts its very own blend of melancholy, energy, and hope. Singer Rio Black and instrumentalist Mirco Rappsilber present \u201cIn Between Sadness,\u201d an album born deep from personal loss and genuine emotional turmoil. \u201cThese songs had to be on one record together,\u201d says Rio. Mirco lost his parents within a few months and later his in-laws as well. \u201cI was thrust from a state of absolute happiness into total grief,\u201d he says, describing the time when everything changed. <\/p>\n\n

Music as a Way to Cope<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

After the loss, nothing seemed possible for Mirco at first. \u201cI really thought I might never be able to make music again.\u201d The line from \u201cThe Last Year\u201d\u2014\u201cNo sound, no music, no sound\u201d\u2014reflects that fear and the pain behind it. It wasn\u2019t until weeks later that a creative breakthrough occurred: \u201cSuddenly, something just \u2018clicked.\u2019\u201d For Rio, too, the album became an outlet. \u201cIt was grief, frustration, and emptiness\u2014the beginning of the healing process.\u201d \u201cThe Last Year\u201d and \u201cLeaving the Flat\u201d in particular speak of saying goodbye, speechlessness, and the feeling of suddenly, definitively becoming an adult. <\/p>\n\n
