It took 25 years to wait for a new album from Phantoms of Future. But it finally happened: \u201cForever Dark\u201d has been released. To chat about it in detail with mastermind Sir Hannes, I meet him one Friday at his record store. It\u2019s quite busy, as I notice when I walk in. I\u2019m led straight to the back, to Hannes\u2019s office. He\u2019s still in the middle of a conversation with a customer, but he invites me in anyway. \u2014 This is the second part of our interview. You can read the first part here<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n

Werewolf Meets Toilet Rocker<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Of course, we\u2019re talking about the latest album, *Forever Dark*. Hannes asks me about my favorite song and guesses it right away. \u201cWerewolf!\u201d he laughs. I explain to him the atmosphere the song conveys to me. \u201cThere\u2019s just a certain vibe to it,\u201d he nods contentedly. For him, too, the song stands above all for strength and a special attitude toward life. Since \u201cUnderground Surfer\u201d is also one of my favorites, I learn the story behind it: \u201cWe were on tour with The Idiots, the band I was in before Phantoms of Future. At a show in Berlin, a girl fell in love with me and drove after us. The following year, we were in Dresden. After the show, I met another girl and we ended up in the bathroom.\u201d Like a gentleman, Hannes draws a veil of silence over the further details. Years later, however, the line \u201cI\u2019m a toilet rocker\u201d was born. <\/p>\n\n

The Sun in Your Heart<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

It becomes clear that songs are usually based on personal experiences when we talk about \u201cSun,\u201d Phantoms of Future\u2019s biggest and best-known song. \u201cBack then, I lived in Dortmund\u2019s Nordstadt neighborhood,\u201d Hannes recalls. Mentally, he wasn\u2019t doing very well at the time. A difficult childhood and the fact that he\u2019d lived on the streets in places like London, Hamburg, and Berlin between the ages of 13 and 18 had taken their toll. \u201cI went up onto the roof of the building. And suddenly I saw a black cat walking around on the roof. I heard the birds chirping. And somehow, that\u2019s when I had the inspiration for the lyric \u2018Send the sun in my heart,\u2019\u201c he recalls. That inspiration gave rise to the song that would go on to be played over and over again\u2014not just in German nightclubs. \u201cSun\u201d took clubs across Europe by storm and became Phantoms of Future\u2019s biggest hit. <\/p>\n\n

Not having to wait another 20 years<\/strong><\/p>\n\n

Anyone who has the chance to talk to Hannes will quickly realize: He lives and breathes music. \u201cI\u2019m obsessed with music,\u201d he admits. \u201cI\u2019d die for it. Nobody believes me when I say that, but it\u2019s true. I\u2019m completely obsessed with it.\u201d So it\u2019s hardly surprising that another Phantoms of Future album shouldn\u2019t be too long in coming. \u201cWe\u2019ve already written some new songs,\u201d Hannes nods. \u201cI\u2019d never make an album just to meet a deadline. After all, \u2018Forever Dark\u2019 took five years. But now I\u2019m back in a great creative flow, and so is the band. So it won\u2019t take that long. We already have six new songs for the next album. We\u2019re heading into the studio this summer. If everything goes well, a follow-up to \u2018Forever Dark\u2019 could be released in late 2027 or early 2028.\u201d <\/p>\n\n

The farewell after our conversation is extremely warm and includes an invitation to meet again at a Phantoms of Future live show. And the reunion? It\u2019s happening later this year! <\/p>\n\n
