On their third album “Chimera”, Canadian band The City Gates once again oscillate between melancholic post-punk and rousing cold wave. The first song “Lapidation” already makes it clear in which direction they are heading. The track “Capitol Hill”, which has already been released as a single, and the driving “It’s a Violent Life” are particularly gripping. The other six tracks will also draw you involuntarily into a thoughtful, yet danceable maelstrom of melancholy and dance fever. Anyone who has managed to get past The City Gates so far and loves bands like Joy Division should definitely give “Chimera” a listen.
