With “In Between Sadness”, the post-punk and dark wave duo The Calm Grey from North Rhine-Westphalia deliver a remarkably intense album about loss, grief and slowly finding your footing again. Personal vulnerability runs like a common thread through all the songs – from the speechlessness of “The Last Year” to the existential emptiness of “Leaving The Flat” and the dark restlessness of “These Grey Alleys”. But instead of lingering in melancholy, The Calm Grey combine raw energy with elegant lightness: wavy guitars, flowing synths and driving rhythms create space for hope that is palpable.
