BEYOND THE VEIL interview

– The members are international and live in Los Angeles and Germany.
We talk to the international Metal band about the fate of the hunter, what is behind the veil and how best to fight your inner rage.
Orkus: How did the desire to start Beyond the Veil come about?
Beyond the Veil: We met via various online avenues. We were each looking to do a heavy collaboration and when we started working together, it “clicked”. At the start the idea was based around starting a deathcore act with an emphasis on horror, but as we’ve grown as a group we’ve evolved from straight deathcore and incorporated more of our influences of Death Metal and Black Metal into our writing.
O: Thanks to the Internet, you can collaborate anywhere in the world. How do you cope with the different places of residence?
BtV: We all stay in contact via different messenger apps and use a shared cloud storage for recordings. Each person does their part, adds it to the collaboration and uploads it. After we’ve gotten to a point where we like it. Jimmy then takes it and works some magic on it to make it sound awesome. From that point, we’ll start refining and then rinse and repeat until we’re happy with it.
O: Doesn’t that also make live shows more difficult?
BtV: That is something we have been approached about and something we’ve been asked about by some fans, but it’s not something we’ve been able to do yet. It would take the right situation for us to do it and given the landscape of touring as it is now, that is really hard to find.
O: What inspired the band’s name?
BtV: The veil, or the barrier between the living and the dead, is pretty interesting as a concept; especially as it relates to horror. Given what we were started out wanting to do with the horror theme, going beyond the veil seemed to fit well with theme and brutality of what we wanted to accomplish.
O: How did you come up with the idea to name the EP “The Hunter’s Fate”?
BtV: It’s tied the the concept we’re using from the video game “Bloodborne”. The Hunters in “Bloodborne” are warriors who hunt beasts and uncover cosmic mysteries in a gothic, plague-ridden city called Yharnam.
O: Does “The Hunter’s Fate” have a kind of red line?
BtV: “The Hunter’s Fate” has a clear red line, being “Bloodborne” themed. If you’re not familiar with it – “Bloodborne” is a video game by the Japanese developers FromSoft. The setting is quite lovecraftian and we love the lore of this fictional world. The setting is quite lovecraftian and we love the lore of this fictional world. Every single song off our EP deals with some lore from “Bloodborne”. The hunters mostly have a tragic and bleak ending – several of the songs touch upon this subject, hence “The Hunter’s Fate”. The Vilebloods, Maria, Father Gascoigne, Ebrietas – all of these are familiar to anyone who played the game. So you could say it’s a bit of a concept EP.
O: One song I particularly enjoyed was “Moonlit Servitude.” How did it come into being?
BtV: Adam was messing around with major 7th dyads in a rhythmic pattern and we ended up liking how it sounded, so we started basing a song around it. The idea laid dormant for a few days, until he got buzzed one night and recorded the song as a demo for us to listen to. We all dug it and went from there to put it down.
O: What are the three albums that have inspired you the most?
BtV: It’s really hard to pinpoint our influences down to a handful of bands. A lot of things that inspire us are things like horror themes and elements of horror. Sometimes the stuff we write isn’t even really inspired by anything musically, but more life experience. For example, someone has a shitty day at work and starts writing a song to get rid of their anger.
O: What is the next step for Beyond the Veil? Is an album planned?
BtV: At least of the time being, we’ll stick with this lyrical theme using “Bloodborne”, so you can eventually expect “The Hunter’s Fate” to turn into a full length concept album. And after that, who knows? We all really enjoy our trip through Yharnam, so it’s not inconceivable that we stay there, or we may branch out do something else. All we can really say for certain is that it will be brutal and use a lot of elements present in horror.
