BLINDZEILE interview (2/2)

Blindpop’s style could be described as a fusion of dream pop, electronica, indie and wave. Or as the band, founded in 2016, put it themselves: basement pop! We continue our two-part interview with David Pümperlin about the new album “Voliere”. If you missed the first part, you can read it here .

“Reappraisal”, enlightenment & illumination?

One objective was “to allow optimism in the lyrics. After three extremely dark albums, I was ready for it. The world situation also made me do it.” The idea of “soft elbows” in “Stets zu ihren Gunsten” was appealing because “on the one hand, it can say that we should reject competitive battles, but it can also express that we no longer have stable elbows because of all the competitive battles. I would like to see more softness for humanity, but I suspect that hardness will continue to spread for the time being.” Oneness also appears as a theme. As far as the role of art in finding and accepting common ground is concerned, David “sees the process in the reverse order: creative things can arise through proximity to people – at least that’s how it is for me. Creativity is able to dissolve boundaries in some places, but reveals them in others.”

Feathers & spines

The secret behind the tame hedgehog watching over the paper in “Lavender” also allows for creativity, as it remains undisclosed: “I want to leave the hedgehog in particular open to my own associations, which is why I’m keeping quiet.” The bird on the cover of “Bewegung” (2019) is “so free that it hasn’t been given a name. It would clearly reject an aviary – just as we probably would, even though routine as a kind of cage can be quite pleasant or useful from time to time.” There is movement in the new album, for example in “Tage tanzen”. “Some of the songs on ‘Voliere’ get me moving physically, some move my mind. I hope that the listeners feel the same way.”
