David Bowie - Pin Ups

Faded stardust, part 2

50 years ago, David Bowie released the covers-only album “Pin Ups”. In the first part, we already wrote about the unfavorable conditions under which the album was created. This is where we will continue in the second part.

Not good stardust
“Pin Ups” was not supposed to be under a good star. Guitarist Mick Ronson and bassist Trevor Bolder, part of the live band The Spiders from Mars, were present in the studio, but there was tension. One reason for this was that Bowie said during the last concert that “this is the last show we’ll ever do”. – Without the band knowing about these plans. In addition, Ronson and Bolder found out that pianist Mike Garson received more money than they did. The tensions during the recording sessions at the Château d’Hérouville, France, were so great that bassist Bolder recorded his parts as quickly as possible and then left. Ronson, on the other hand, went to the other extreme: he tuned all the instruments and worked on all the arrangements – so great was his fear for his professional future.
