DEPECHE MODE: 40 years ago – “Construction Time Again” (Part 1)

Automatic translation. Improvements are constantly being worked on.

Depeche Mode released their third album “Construction Time Again” on August 22, 1983. It was a milestone in many ways: it was the first album in which Alan Wilder was named as a full member. However, he himself felt like “the new band member for many years”, as he said on the occasion of the CD/DVD re-edition. It was also the first Depeche Mode album on which different sounds (samples) were specially recorded and used to create pieces of music. The samples could be musical instruments, but also a wide variety of sounds. There were no limits to Depeche Mode’s willingness to experiment.

Equipment:
The Synclavier from New England Digital was particularly important. Developed in 1975, it quickly became the object of desire for musicians and sound designers, especially in the 1980s. Pink Floyd, Kraftwerk, Frankie Goes to Hollywood (“Liverpool”, 1986) and Grace Jones (“Slave to the Rhythm”, 1985), among others, also used the Synclavier.

Recording & Production:
Daniel Miller remained Depeche Mode‘s producer until 1988. The album was recorded at John Foxx’s The Garden studios. Construction Time Again” was mixed at the Hansa Studio in Berlin, which was the only recording studio in Europe at the time that could record so many tracks: 56. The studio in London had 24 tracks by comparison. From the Hansa Studio you could see the Berlin Wall and the patrolling border guards.

In the next part, we take a closer look at the videos and also discuss the album cover and the title of “Construction Time Again”.
