Q+A / Story : KINGSTON & GREYSTARR: “It almost serves as a modern-day warning.”

New Wave duo Kingston & GreyStarr breathe new life into the Depeche Mode song “Nothing” in their new single of the same name. The two ladies, one from New York and the other from the UK, are supported by none other than Daniel Ash(Bauhaus, Love & Rockets).

Collaboration with legends

The original idea to ask Daniel Ash to participate came from radio DJ Christopher the Minister. “He is a veteran of the music industry, having worked with Daniel Ash for 25 years on Love & Rockets, his solo project,” they explain. How did the choice of the song come about? That’s when we let Christopher himself have his say: “I’ve always felt that ‘Nothing’ is an underrated and brilliant song by Depeche Mode, and it’s also my favorite song from ‘Music for the Masses’. After hearing Kingston & GreyStarr’s“Covered in Glitter” EP and their rendition of Talking Heads “Psycho Killer”, I knew they would be perfect.”

Kingston & Greystarr nod their heads in response: “We really liked the concept of the Minister. The collaboration with him and Adrian Burke (producer – author’s note) was so great. – And Daniel is a legend, we are very honored that he gave his magic to the song. Our sonic roots are inspired by New Wave, so to take a legendary band’s song and create something new is more than we can ask for as artists.”

Timeless

The two see above all the timelessness of the song, which was written 35 years ago. “His message is still very relevant. It almost serves as a modern warning. The idea that there is so much white noise emanating from so many places – social media, news, billions of other digital avenues – that sometimes it feels like literally nothing is being said and no one is really communicating,” the pair continue.

Future

They’re set to release their second EP in late spring. “This will be our first record of original music,” the two rejoice, “and will also include some reworked interpretations of music we love. Live performances are always a home base for us. We loved opening for artists like A Flock of Seagulls, Tiffany and Angel. So we’re looking forward to playing our new songs live and reaching out to new audiences.”
