HELDAUTOMAT: Where the Past Meets the Present

There are timeless songs that have lost none of their impact even after several decades. In 1994, the song “Anders sein” was released by Second Decay, Christian Purwien’s band at the time. The track, taken up by Purwiens and Thomas Kowa’s new project Heldautomat, has remained comparatively minimalist—but not as a nostalgically romanticized revival, rather as a reinterpretation with darker, more nuanced contours. It quickly becomes clear that some themes don’t age, but rather shift in meaning—toward something timeless. Heldautomat doesn’t attempt to reproduce the original, but rather to engage with it anew and bring it into the present—in the form of irresistible dark synth-pop sounds.
