Since its founding in 2003, Nouvelle Vague has seen itself less as a traditional band and more as a musical project. Marc Collin and Olivier Libaux, who passed away in 2021, made it their mission to give punk and new wave classics a completely new twist by blending them with bossa nova and electropop. For the next phase of their project, they’ve set their sights on the repertoire of Depeche Mode —the band that, more than almost any other, epitomizes the sound of the ’80s. Titled “A Date with Depeche Mode,” a compilation will be released on October 30 via PIAS Recordings that strips down the cool, synthetic originals and rebuilds them in a completely different musical landscape.
