That’s how it was with IN EXTREMO

Hanover, December 13, 2024
Support: Rauhbein, Koriklaani
Ready for a medieval adventure?
With hurdy-gurdy, bagpipe and shawm, you inevitably end up in the Middle Ages – and when there’s really fat music attached to it, everything speaks for one name: In Extremo! They have been storming the stages with their explosive mixture of rock, metal and authentic medieval sounds for a good 30 years and have become the undisputed kings of medieval rock. Their shows are more than just concerts – they are epic battlefields where myth, magic and heavy riffs explode in a firework display of energy. With breathtaking pyrotechnics and a stage presence that is second to none, they enchant the audience at every performance. On their “Wolkenschieber” tour, named after the current album of the same name – which we talked about in the fall issue – they conquered Hanover in December 2024. The line-up alone promised a lot: with Rauhbein and Korpiklaani as captivating support acts, the foundations were laid for an unforgettable end to the year.
Hearts of warriors
Rauhbein kicked off punctually at 6:45 p.m. and immediately went into full swing! Unbridled with hard riffs and a good dose of Irish folk, they stormed the stage to conquer it. Authentic, cheeky and always absolutely rousing, Rauhbein around singer Henry captivated the audience in no time at all – an impressive performance from a band that had only stirred up the scene two years earlier with their debut album “Steh wieder auf” and now shone as a harbinger of things to come. With a lot of self-confidence and the promise that this is just the beginning, the band promoted their third current album “Adrenalin” and the upcoming tour 2025 – a foretaste that whetted the appetite for more.
Clan of the wilderness
As soon as the curtain fell, Finnish folk rockers Korpiklaani took over and offered a firework display of rousing sounds, wild energy and Finnish charm. With their rough polka rhythms, driving folk and a dose of madness, they catapulted the audience into a wild, swinging rock universe and got the hall sweating from the very first note. Their music and performance were a festival of energy, with never a foot standing still – every song was a fiery dance!
Korpiklaani proved in Hanover that they are an absolute experience. Their mixture of ancient tradition, pure joie de vivre and wild metal made the whole hall tremble. It was a powerful performance, during which even speechless looks turned into enthusiastic cheers.
Cloud warriors
And then came the magical moment: In Extremo entered the stage with a thunderous bang that sent the hall into a collective state of shock – only to turn into pure ecstasy when Micha “Das letzte Einhorn” Rhine’s raspy voice rose to the first notes of “Olafur” from the current album “Wolkenschieber”. One cult song followed another, from “Spielmannsfluch” and “Nur ihr allein” to the euphoric “Vollmond”, during which the audience almost completely took over the singing. Afterwards: “Weckt die Toten” in a duet with Henry von Rauhbein, followed by further classics from an impressive 30-year repertoire with powerful new interpretations of “Troja”, “Störtebeker”, “Liam” (together with Rauhbein), “Gaukler”, “Frei zu sein” and the legendary “Ai Vis Lo Lop”. In between, newer songs from the current album such as the namesake of the tour “Wolkenschieber”, “Unser Lied”, the melodious “Feine Seele” or the powerful “Blutmond”. Accompanied by spectacular pyrotechnic effects, soap bubbles filled with smoke and confetti cannons, the evening intensified song by song and made the hall glow. People sang, danced and raved together. For the encores “Sternhagelvoll” and “Feuertaufe”, there was no holding back and for the final smash hit “Pikse Palve”, almost all of the evening’s musicians joined together on stage to send the completely enthusiastic audience off into the dark night, exhausted but full of bliss, in a firework display full of emotion and ecstasy. An evening that not only more than made up for the originally postponed date, but also impressively proved it: In Extremo still rock with unbridled power.
