WGT Memories 2023: SÜNDENKLANG

Automatic translation. Improvements are constantly being worked on.

“These are just moments that, after all these years, just still bring goosebumps to the back of your neck.” (Mart Soer)

How often have you been to the WGT so far? (As a visitor and as an artist)
Since I don’t live that far away from Leipzig, I’m lucky enough to have been to the WGT many times … Except for a few years when I had shows in other cities, I’ve been there as often as I could for the last 20 years. I then also always take the entire time from Thursday to Tuesday.

What did you think before the gig and how do you look back on it today?
With Sündenklang it was the first show in a long time and the only festival show this year in Germany. Of course, you want everything to work out perfectly and you’re a little nervous and joyfully excited. I often think through everything 100 times beforehand to make sure everything works out and everyone has everything they need. When the show is on, I don’t really think anymore and just enjoy and after the show all the great impressions stay behind. Then I am just totally satisfied. (smiles)

Which song did you particularly like to play?
This is a difficult question. The Sündenklang songs are all very personal and emotional. If I had to pick one, I’d probably go for “Lieber sterben”. I connect an old story with this song … which started here at the WGT.

Were there any personal meetings that meant a lot to you?
We were lucky enough to play on a day when only friendly bands were playing in our venue. Old friends, and the whole thing was more like a family party than a festival: There was Unzucht – I already played with Schulle in the youth centers when I was 14 – or our buddies from Heldmaschine, and of course Scherbentanz, who we already had as support.

What will you remember for a long time from this year’s WGT?
It is the friendship and the unique togetherness that makes the WGT what it has always been. You are among friends and like-minded people. You just notice that in every moment. In addition, of course, when you as a musician look at the audience of a packed hall for the first time, the first time all hands go up … These are simply moments that after all these years simply still drive the goose bumps in the neck.
