Interview with KRYSTAL SYSTEM
The trio from Krystal System kept their fans waiting thirteen years for a new album. With “Da Punch”, the French band are making a brilliant return on June 26, 2026 and talk to us about it.
All or nothing
All of a sudden it happened very quickly: “It actually only took seven months to write the album and it felt wonderful to reconnect with our musical universe,” answers singer Bonnie, who switches between French and English in her singing, when asked what took so long. Her collaborator, No.7, explains: “We’ve been involved in a lot of other projects over the years, but we’ve never stopped nurturing our creativity. For me, artistic expression goes far beyond music. The essence of art is to stay completely present and free from mental noise, and to embody this state in everyday life. That’s what we’ve been focusing on over time.” The master of the synthesizers goes into even more detail and confesses a drastic thought: “And honestly, at times I also thought I was done with music, but all of a sudden we both felt this need to pick up our instruments and speak through Krystal Sytem. At this time we also met our new bass player Phi. This meeting was really important, there was an instant connection and a lot of shared ideas. And the more we talked, the more we realized that we were all about equally dissatisfied with the music scene today.”
A punch as the cherry on the cake
The three are particularly vulnerable on the title track. Bonnie tells us how this came about: “‘Da Punch’ comes from a deep concern for the world around us. Forests are disappearing, species are disappearing and human suffering is increasing and often we just stand by indifferently. This song aims to give voice to this discomfort, the questions and our collective passivity. With the unusual three-four time signature, which is somewhat asymmetrical, we wanted to show this instability.” Her band colleague No.7 elaborates: “We had twelve songs for the album, but felt that something was still missing. ‘Da Punch’ was the last song we wrote and ended up being the key to the whole project. It inspired the album title, the cover and the whole concept. It was the missing piece of the puzzle, the piece that revealed the whole picture.”
