Interview with HEL’S THRONE (2/2)

Hel’s Throne are from Saxony-Anhalt, which has no direct connection to the North Sea. So where does their enthusiasm for Norse mythology come from? Zicke grins: “The band was founded in Saxony-Anhalt by two guys from Brandenburg (Jürgen and me) and one from Saxony-Anhalt (Willy), but the current lineup spans three federal states, since the rest of us are from Leipzig. The idea—or rather, the passion for Norse mythology—basically comes from me, since I’ve personally been into it for many years and have always wanted to incorporate it into my music as part of a band. Good thing Willy and Jürgen didn’t have anything against it back when we founded the band, haha.” So local legends have no place in the band’s lyrics? “That’s actually best answered by our band name, Hel’s Throne, which we deliberately chose back then because of the theme. Hel, the goddess of the Norse underworld, is the central figure of our live shows, so we’re currently limiting ourselves to themes from Scandinavia. And with this rich world of legends, we can still fill a few more albums. But you never know what’s still to come.”
