After the third or fourth listen, it dawned on me how awesome this is…” (Marian Gold)

In the first part, we spoke to Marian Gold about how it feels to look back on 40 years of Alphaville and to what extent the 1980s were the last innocent decade. On the occasion of his best-of “Forever! Best of 40 Years”, we continue the conversation.

“The journey is not over yet.”

Can Marian Gold also take something positive from the present day? “I’m still a member of Alphaville, from that band,” he nods. ” Alphaville feels to me like some kind of astral spaceship that flies us through space and time, and this journey isn’t over yet. That’s the great thing about it.” But what has changed? “It’s not that I somehow only ever think about the eighties. The years that Alphaville don’t start there, but rather in the mid-seventies, when I heard “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars” for the first time. That was the first time I was shot into space.” He pauses and then corrects himself: “Or maybe even much earlier.”

Whisky à Go Go

“I bought my first record when I was twelve years old. It was a live album and I didn’t even know the artist. “Johnny Rivers live at the ‘Whisky à Go Go'”. I had no idea what kind of music was on it. The record was used and quite scratched and cost 8 marks. I only had 10 marks and couldn’t afford a new album. And the first time I heard it, I couldn’t do much with the music either. But I listened to the record again and again because it was the only one I had. After the third or fourth listen, it dawned on me how cool what this guy was doing was. I think I played that record at least a million times and each time I imagined I was in this famous club in Hollywood, the ‘Whisky A Go Go’, where the The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin and so many other of my heroes at the time had performed.” Years later, things would come full circle. On the last US tour in 2017, Gold was driving down Sunset Boulevard with his driver after the gig in Burbank. He noticed the neon letters “Whisky à Go Go” out of the corner of his eye. It turned out that the original “Whisky” still existed. Playing in 2018 Alphaville finally live there, and Marian fulfilled a childhood dream. A dream that began in 1967.

In the last part, we ask ourselves what David Bowie would actually do and venture a look into the future.
