Q+A / Story (1/3): RUMMELSNUFF: “Scientists have found out…”
Scientists have found that virtually every mammal has this ability, only most humans have lost it.
For Käpt’n Rummelsnuff a new album is a powerful event, since the last release – apart from an equally powerful best-of – was six years ago. And so it is legitimate that the current work gets a powerful name: “Äquatortaufe”. We talk to Roger Baptist about cosmonauts, wiggling ears and Saxon gourmet delights in three parts.
Orkus: How did it come about that with “Interkosmos” now a song was dedicated to the first German in the cosmos, Sigmund Jähn?
Roger Baptist: Sigmund’s space flight was primarily a gift from the Soviet Union, of course, certainly not a cheap one. But for the small country in Germany’s east, it was a terrific event, and one in which a large part of the population joined in the celebrations – at least we children were thrilled. Sigmund’s pictures hung for a time in offices and schools next to those of Erich Honecker. Of course, the cult of personality always invited jokes, but unlike Erich, Siggi was able to enjoy the sympathy of the people beyond the existence of the GDR. When Rummelsnuff revisited the events surrounding the Soyuz 31 flight of Valery Bykovsky and Sigmund Jähn 41 years later, both cosmonauts were still alive. In the months between the creation and publication of the song, both comrades had passed into the eternal cosmos in quick succession.
O: There’s also a video about this, completely immersed in green. Okay, I imagine muscular people can handle the chest bobbing. But the one with the ears? When did you discover this ability?
RB: That the ears can be controlled by the muscles was discovered by a still very young Rummelsnuff. Ear wiggling, either with only one or with both ears together, he could already present to his kindergarten friends. Scientists have found that virtually every mammal has this ability, only most humans have lost it.
